Artist Statement - Pietro Finelli

201@105 is pleased to present a solo exhibition by PIETRO FINELLI, called SILVER SHIPS ON NYC. The exhibition will open on Sunday, December 14th 2025 and run through February 12th 2026. There will be a reception for the artist from 5pm to 9pm on December 14th. At the request of the gallery, the following press release is authored entirely by the artist.

Silver Ships ploughs through the fabric of NYC, engraving furrows upon it [ from the Latin sulcare, "to trace a furrow, to cut through, "derived from sulcus, "furrow"].

With this title, Pietro Finelli imbues his work with both the undulating movement of a ship and the incisive, excavating motion of leaving and revealing a trace. Through these two motions -- forward and downward -- the work assumes the configuration of a profound mark, yet one that is not static. The diachronic, cinematic flow of time is subverted into the transitivity of parallel planes.

Finelli's well-known interest is classic cinema, especially film noir -- whose structure and articulation he has been investigating for years -- is particularly relevant here ("Film noir was a deeply creative period, perhaps the most creative in the entire history of Hollywood," Paul Schrader).

This film, Finelli has deconstructed a short film by artist Luca Maria Patella, shot in 1968 and titled SKMP2, an acronym for Fabio Sargentini, Jannis Kounellis, Eliseo Mattiacci, Pino Pascali and Patella himself (together with his partner, Rosa Foschi). Finelli weaves a new discourse from it, expanding it to include artists such as David Hammons, Jean-Luc Godard, Fritz Lang, while also giving greater space to an artist like Rosa Foschi.

By working on Patella's filmic text, Finelli disassembles and reconstructs it according to a new temporal and spatial order. The film becomes embedded within another film -- a new and unpublished work, full of multiple layers of reference.

The material, engraved into the fabric of something as ephemeral as paper, unfolds across multiple screens. This is the hallmark of Finelli's folded paper works.

This new paper film -- Sidereus Nuncius -- Eppur si muove, mixed media on paper 184 x 302 cm, 2024 -- achieves a simultaneous and centripetal movement, sinking into memory and suggesting unprecedented juxtapositions both about and within contemporaneity.

Each scene, distilled with surgical precision from the cinematic continuum, is sublimated into an abstract dimension, where the single episode becomes an alibi for an investigation into the mechanisms of percieving reality as filtered through the camera's lens. The exhibition features entirely new never-before-seen works.
